An improvement on our last outing, however, the only way was up. Micah Richards may prove to be the right back we have been looking for – strong, fast, effective in attack. Rooney continues to improve at international level, albeit slowly. I remain confident that we will qualify for the Euro Championships in 2008. Being deluded about your team’s potential is part of the qualification of a true England fan………

Yesterday, I received by email (like many official England fans) a “message” from Steve McClaren. The first sentence read as follows:

Make no mistake the players, staff and myself are, like you, all hurting today.

Really?

I made a decision after the miserable performance in Germany not to travel abroad following England for the forseeable future. Up until then, I had attended the last three tournaments and qualifying games in the rather pitiful hope that the team might just play to its purported ‘potential’. After Wednesday’s performance, my decision is fast becoming a shrewd one. We did not lose on Wednesday solely because of the system. Performances on and off the pitch were sub-standard. The players and particularly the manager were quite simply not good enough. Who are we to blame?

Firstly, the team needs an injection of new blood. Sadly, Frank Lampard’s performances since Christmas have not warranted a continued place in the team. The irony is, that based on international form, David Beckham has a stronger claim than Lampard for team inclusion.

Secondly, the manager needs replacing. Where did the FA get the idea that he was the right choice? From Scolari to McClaren? These two completely different men could not have been on the same list drawn up by any self-respecting headhunter. What were the requirements of the role? Personally, I always wanted Martin O’Neill. Where are Aston Villa now?

Tonight the England team play their first proper competitive match since the World Cup debacle. It feels rather odd not travelling to the game as I have attended the vast majority of England away games in the last 5 years. The Macedonians have taken points off us in the past so I will be hoping for a solid performance tonight.

The England team certainly appears more balanced in recent games. This may be due to the proper deployment of wingers or a slight change in personnel. ?Influence of Mr Venables. In particular, I am hoping Jermaine Defoe has a good game this evening. It was always puzzling to me why he was left out of the last two tournament squads. I was in Gothenburg in March 2004 when he came on early in the game. He played very well that evening – sharp, not afraid to shoot. Clearly, Eriksson was less impressed than me (and many others).

Come on England… 2008 Alpine triumph awaits
