Britain and the Indian Sub-Continent

September 4th, 2006

I have just read Peter Luff’s interesting article on Britain’s future relations with India. One particular paragraph grabbed my attention:

India’s miracle may be economic, but its consequences will also be political. The next political generation will take it for granted that there are three superpowers in the world – the USA, China and India. So David Cameron’s objective should be to lay the foundations for the development of a strong and enduring strategic partnership between the world’s oldest and largest parliamentary democracies that recognises the enormous economic and political opportunities for both nations.

I couldn’t agree more. Because of our history we are well placed to form such a special relationship. Furthermore, because of such a shared history, Britain should also forge closer understandings with other parts of the Indian Sub-Continent. I have recently accepted an invitation to join the committee of the Conservative Friends of Bangladesh. This has been set up to both improve relations between the Bangladesh community and the Conservative Party here in Britain, and to forge closer links between the two countries. More information about the organisation can be found via my links section.
