I do not believe in the death sentence. The “eye for an eye” justification does not wash with me. The state should not take life except during times of war.

Last week, the Iraqi court rightly found Saddam Hussein guilty of many appalling crimes. They were, however, wrong to call for the death penalty. He should be made to sit in a jail and contemplate upon his life, his terrible decisions and his contempt for the lives of others. The Iraqi people should be hanging Saddam out to dry, not to die.
