In a crucial vote in the House of Commons, Dr Phillip Lee MP voted to expand Heathrow Airport, as the Government secured Parliament’s support for its plans by a majority of 296.Bracknell’s MP, who has advocated for increased airport capacity since 2013, supported the plans as the evidence shows that it isin the economic interests of the UK, the Thames Valley and the Bracknell constituency, where it employs thousands both directly and indirectly.Championing local concerns about aircraft noise and pollution, Dr Lee called on the Government to strengthen its plans to mitigate the impact on local people and the environment.
Dr Phillip Lee said:“It is good news that at last we can get on with delivering the airport capacity our country so badly needs. It will bring big benefits to Bracknell – there will be more jobs and it will help make our businesses even more competitive. But if we’re going to do this, we must do it properly. The Government can and must cut noise and pollution. And it must strengthen its processes so the taxpayer doesn’t have to pick up the tab for yet another infrastructure project overspend. This is a drop in the ocean as far as a national infrastructure fit for the 21st century goes, especially post-Brexit.As a country, we need a strategic approach to deliver what we need quickly at the same time as fulfilling our responsibilities to look after our communities and our planet.”
