Dr Phillip Lee MP: Urgent Question to the Health Minister
In the Health and Social Care Bill Debate in the House of Commons on Tuesday 28th of February 2012, Dr Phillip Lee MP for Bracknell, addressed the important issue of Private Finance Initiative contracts backed by the previous Labour Government, which are now costing the NHS almost £3,000 per minute.
During an Urgent Questions Debate to the Health Minister, Dr Lee enquired the Departments intention to ease the debt from PFI contracts inherited from the previous government. He asked: “Will the Secretary of State detail what his Department and the Treasury are doing to help to alleviate this enormous level of debt, which has risked the viability of some NHS services?”
The Minister responded by acknowledging the unsustainable path on which PFI contracts were negotiated and ensured Dr Lee that the Department is helping all trusts with PFI contracts to manage the costs of those contracts.
