Statement: Theresa May announces resignation

“I am saddened that the PM has announced her resignation. She faced an incredibly difficult task in interpreting and delivering the 2016 Referendum result and ultimately the Brexit process has brought her premiership to a premature end.

“The Theresa May I know and am proud to call a friend is a woman with a genuine sense of public duty and love for her country – we all saw that today outside Downing Street. She led our country with a sense of purpose, pride and dedication that few could match.

“Disappointingly, for some time many of my colleagues have been plotting to remove her. They tried and failed before Christmas, but sadly they have now succeeded.

“I hope that my fellow Conservatives realise what this looks like to the public. The last thing the country expects us to be doing at this critical time is indulge in a lengthy Conservative Party leadership contest when the clock is ticking down to No Deal, an outcome which does not have the informed consent of the British people.”
